Farmhouse style may be very “in” at the moment, but truth be told, it’s been around for a very long time! Classic farmhouse style isn’t about adding kitchy farm elements to your kitchen, but is rather about curating a collected home – one that has a story to tell! Classic farmhouse style means slowing down and enjoying the scenery.
The family and I have been farmhouse dreaming lately! We dream of wide open space, a slower pace of life and good old-fashioned time spent with family and friends! Classic Farmhouse Lighting
Lighting has a powerful way of transforming a home’s aesthetic! Classic farmhouse lighting is weathered and vintaged, using materials that are natural and sometimes industrial. To add timeless farmhouse style to your home stick with weathered metals, patinaed woods or simple glass. Using these three timeless materials adds warmth and interest – Always in style and never kitchy!

Classic Farmhouse Storage
Classic farmhouses were not huge, but rather they were simple and utilitarian. Mudrooms, storage and baskets were a necessity to keep things neat and tidy; baskets were true farmhouse work horses.
Below are my favorite storage ideas that keep things looking classically calm and collected.
Hooks and Pegs
Simple shaker pegs and classic iron hooks evoke a quintessential farmhouse feel don’t you think? It’s classic and beautiful, yet utilitarian! This new build farmhouse in Kansas is an excellent example of how adding simple shaker pegs to your home can instantly add classic farmhouse charm and intrigue!

Farmhouse Baskets
Back in the day of true farmhouse living, open shelving was very common. The abundance of shelves was a necessity given the fact that food would be harvested, canned and preserved for use throughout the winter.
Today, we have modern technology and such food prep/storage is not necessarily a necessity. However, the look and simplicity of open shelving is still a stylish and popular choice.
The best way to keep open shelves (whether in a kitchen or living area) and mudroom storage looking calm and collected is thru the use of baskets.
When implementing a classic farmhouse look that stands the test of time, look for baskets made from natural, weaved fibers and options that incorporate wood and vintage/weathered metals. Coral shoes, hats, mittens, toys, etc. in baskets for a look that is functional and beautiful!
